DetailOrigin: Native to the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, adapted to rocky cliffs and dry woodland habitats with well-drained soils.Growth: Develops a large, fleshy underground tuber (up to 8 inches/20cm diameter). Above ground, it produces short stems covered in dense white hairs; leaves are oval, fuzzy, and silvery-green, clustering at the stem top that drop in dry dormancy.Flowers: Blooms in spring, sending up tall stalks with clusters of bright orange-red, tubular flowers (1.5-2 inches/4-5cm long). Flowers are showy and attract hummingbirds, contrasting vividly with the white-hairy foliage.Light: Thrives in bright indirect light (4-5 hours daily). Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the fuzzy leaves; ideal for east-facing windows or shaded outdoor spots.Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—keep soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in winter (dormancy); let soil dry out almost completely to prevent tuber rot.Soil & Potting: Use well-draining mix of peat moss + perlite + vermiculite (2:2:1 ratio). Choose a shallow pot to accommodate the tuber; ensure adequate drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.Hardiness: USDA zones 10-11.
