Origin: Native to the southern and southwestern regions of Madagascar, adapted to dry, rocky slopes and semi-arid scrublands with low, erratic seasonal rainfall.
Growth: Develops a smooth, oval-shaped fleshy caudex (up to 8 inches/20cm diameter) with pale gray-green bark. Slender, upright stems emerge from the caudex top, bearing dense rosettes of narrow, glossy green leaves (2-3 inches/5-7.5cm long) that drop in dry dormancy.
Flowers: Blooms in summer, producing clusters of small, trumpet-shaped white or pale pink flowers (1-1.5 inches/2.5-3.8cm wide) at the top of stems. Flowers are delicate and fragrant, creating a soft contrast with the plant’s structured caudex and rosette foliage.
Light: Thrives in full bright sunlight (6-7 hours daily) to maintain caudex compactness and rosette density. Tolerates light partial shade in extreme midday heat; indoor plants need a south-facing window for optimal growth.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth (spring-summer)—let soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to rare watering in winter dormancy; overwatering easily causes caudex rot, especially in cool conditions.
Soil & Potting: Use ultra-well-draining mix of cactus soil + pumice + coarse sand (3:2:1 ratio). Plant caudex with 1/3 exposed above soil; choose a shallow, wide pot to showcase its smooth oval shape and rosette foliage.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9-11. Tolerates brief temperatures down to 32°F (0°C); protect from frost and keep indoors in colder climates during winter.
